Translation into Spanish Practice Mark Scheme

Edexcel A Level Spanish (9SP0) — Paper 2, Section A: Translation into Spanish

Translation into Spanish Practice 1–5: Mark Scheme

Section A – Question 1 (translation) into assessed language

This task is a points-based mark scheme in which 1 mark is given for each correct individual section of language. A correct translation is provided in a grid which also outlines the alternative translations that will be accepted or the translations to be rejected. Marking principles for error tolerance with examples are given directly above the grid.

Marking principles

• Accents: non-grammatical accent errors are tolerated, for example jovenes rather than jóvenes unless they cause ambiguity (for example entro rather than entró).

• Spelling: non-grammatical mis-spellings are tolerated, for example imigracion rather than inmigración, as long as they are not ambiguous or in the wrong language (for example eimigración or immigration).

• Verb endings must be correct and will not be classed as spelling errors.

• Adjective endings must be correct and will not be classed as spelling errors.

• Repeated capitalisation errors will not be penalised (for example Español instead of español).

• Accept any appropriate alternatives that do not already appear in the acceptable answers column.

How the real mark schemes are applied (Pearson examiner reports 2018–2025)

• The language in each box must be completely correct for the mark to be awarded. One grammatical error in a box loses that box.

• The Spanish must be a faithful rendering of the English. Paraphrase, changed meaning or an omitted word (even, almost, perhaps, still) does not score.

• English words, or spellings that turn a word into an English word, score nothing.

• Extra words are ignored if they do not make the box wrong.

• Boxes can depend on each other: where a choice in one box decides what is correct in the next, this is noted in the Accept column.

Practice 1: Leaving Home

Theme 1: Evolution of Spanish society — changes in family structure (Spain)

In Spain, young people leave their parents’ home later than in most European countries. Many of them have been looking for a stable job for years, but rents have risen so much that it is almost impossible to save. Lucía, a twenty-nine-year-old nurse whose salary is not enough to pay for a flat, still lives with her mother. “If I earned a little more, I would share a flat with my friends,” she admits. It is not surprising that young couples are having fewer children, which worries the government. Politicians have talked about building more affordable housing, but few believe that the problem will be solved soon.

Practice 2: The Day of the Dead

Theme 2: Political and artistic culture in the Hispanic world — festivals and traditions (Mexico)

Every year, in early November, millions of Mexicans remember their loved ones who have died. The Day of the Dead, which was declared part of the world’s cultural heritage in 2008, is celebrated not only in Mexico but also in many communities in the United States. Families decorate altars with yellow flowers, candles and the favourite dishes of the deceased. When Rosa was a child, her grandmother always prepared a special bread that they ate together in the cemetery. Nowadays, it is young artists who keep the tradition alive, painting skulls on the walls of the city. Perhaps this festival will become even more popular in the coming years.

Practice 3: A New Life in Valencia

Theme 3: Immigration and multicultural Spanish society — integration (Spain)

Andrés, an Ecuadorian engineer, arrived in Valencia in 2015 with his wife and two daughters. Before emigrating, he had worked for a large company, but in Spain his qualifications were not recognised, so he spent three years cleaning offices at night. “If my neighbours had not helped us, we would have returned to Quito,” he recalls. Today he runs a small association that helps newly arrived immigrants to find housing and learn their rights. Its volunteers, many of whom were once refugees, accompany families to the town hall so that nobody feels alone. For Andrés, integration is a process that depends on both the newcomers and the local community.

Practice 4: The First Free Elections

Theme 4: Franco’s dictatorship and the transition to democracy (Spain)

My grandmother still remembers the 15th of June 1977, the day on which Spaniards voted in free elections for the first time in more than forty years. After Franco’s death, many people feared that the army would try to stop the reforms. “At that time we were very nervous, because nobody knew what was going to happen,” she told me. She had queued for two hours outside a school whose walls were covered in posters. That night the results were announced on the radio and the whole family celebrated them. The following year, the new constitution was approved by the vast majority of voters in a referendum.

Practice 5: Tourism in a Fishing Village

Theme 1: Evolution of society — the impact of tourism (Colombia)

Until recently, San Isidro was a quiet fishing village on the Colombian coast. Since the airport opened, the number of visitors has been growing every year, and fishermen’s houses are being converted into hotels. Many residents welcome tourism because it creates jobs, especially for young people who would otherwise have to move to the city. However, prices have doubled in less than five years, which forces some families to leave the neighbourhood where they were born. The mayor insists that tourism should benefit everyone. “If we do not protect our beaches, visitors will stop coming,” he warns. It is essential that the community takes part in these decisions.
