| Until recently, San Isidro was a quiet fishing village on the Colombian coast. Since the airport opened, the number of visitors has been growing every year, and fishermen’s houses are being converted into hotels. Many residents welcome tourism because it creates jobs, especially for young people who would otherwise have to move to the city. However, prices have doubled in less than five years, which forces some families to leave the neighbourhood where they were born. The mayor insists that tourism should benefit everyone. “If we do not protect our beaches, visitors will stop coming,” he warns. It is essential that the community takes part in these decisions. |
