| My grandmother still remembers the 15th of June 1977, the day on which Spaniards voted in free elections for the first time in more than forty years. After Franco’s death, many people feared that the army would try to stop the reforms. “At that time we were very nervous, because nobody knew what was going to happen,” she told me. She had queued for two hours outside a school whose walls were covered in posters. That night the results were announced on the radio and the whole family celebrated them. The following year, the new constitution was approved by the vast majority of voters in a referendum. |
