| Andrés, an Ecuadorian engineer, arrived in Valencia in 2015 with his wife and two daughters. Before emigrating, he had worked for a large company, but in Spain his qualifications were not recognised, so he spent three years cleaning offices at night. “If my neighbours had not helped us, we would have returned to Quito,” he recalls. Today he runs a small association that helps newly arrived immigrants to find housing and learn their rights. Its volunteers, many of whom were once refugees, accompany families to the town hall so that nobody feels alone. For Andrés, integration is a process that depends on both the newcomers and the local community. |
